Travelling to France with Children

Generally speaking France is far more child friendly than the UK, there are facilities and more emphasis on child or family activities, accommodations such as large hotels and campgrounds are geared far more to attracting families and providing entertainment for children.

Travelling to France with Children

France actually has a grading system for facilities that welcome children, they have to adhere to strict government standards and then after inspection are awarded the right to use the ‘Kid Stations’ logo this ensures that safety and facility standards are high at that establishment.

Many travelers going to and around France do so by car, long trips in a vehicle are hard on adults but to children can be an endless round of boredom , you see the and quaint villages and beautiful fields, your seven year old see’s some fields that he could be playing football on instead of being trapped in a car.

Try to break the journeys as much as possible stopping at a park or a river where your kids can swim for an hour will slow you down but it will make the next 4 hours more tolerable for them. Make sure they have something to play with; the multitude of tiny electronic devices available now could keep them amused for many hours.

Think about taking three days to get there instead of two, the break the return to something resembling normal routine will help your child deal with the trip. Consider the heat, many air con systems do not work anywhere near as well in the back of the car as the front, invest in a couple of those cheap see through sun screens that stick to the inside of the windows they are worth their weight in gold.

Be aware that if you book a wonderful picture perfect cottage in a stunning little village that may be your idea of heaven but it may be your twelve year olds idea of hell. If you are in a rural location you have to be prepared to make more effort to get involved with entertaining the children, you have to check out in advance what is available in the area , canoeing, horse riding , white water rafting.

You may want to sit in the shade of a tree reading a book but your child possibly doesn’t. Basically you have to compromise between what you see as an ideal location and what your kid’s will expect from a holiday with some thought this should be very possible. If you would like a week in the country your children may cope with that far better if they think they will be spending three days at Disney Paris on the way home.

Plan ahead and think about what your children’s personalities are like and what they will be looking for in a holiday and probably they cant have everything but they can live with what you want if there is also something that they enjoy.
