Mexico has it all - Beach resorts to ancient ruins


Mexico is the seventh most popular tourist destination in the world. Tourism can be divided into two halves the popular beach resorts, and the ancient sites of the lost pre-Columbian civilisations.

There are many ancient sites spread throughout Mexico, they rank in stature and importance with the pyramids of Egypt. Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula is one such location, featuring a huge main pyramid, this was the site of the centre of Mayan culture for over a thousand years.

Kabah near Uxmal features exotic carvings of the rain god Chac, Templo Mayor or the Great Temple in the heart of Mexico City, was a major religious site, for the Aztecs, there are a large number of artefacts on display. There are numerous other such sites all over Mexico, dating back hundreds or even thousands of years Tulum, Uxmal, Teotihuacán, Monte Albán and the Great Pyramid of Cholula, to name but a few.

It is often possible to combine the beach holiday with visits to these sites and museums, Mexico has an incredible 24,000kms of coastline, so obviously there are huge numbers of beaches and beach resorts. On the Pacific coast, the Baja peninsular is a long thin finger of land stretching along the edge of Mexico in the Pacific ocean this area alone has 600 km of coast some popular resorts include, Ensenada, Rosarito, Puerto Nuevo, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Most visitors from Europe, choose the opposite coast, simply because it is geographically closer, there are also large numbers of well established holiday resort areas, especially on the Yucatan peninsula, one of the most popular resorts is Cancún famous the world over as a luxury vacation getaway, there are actually two halves to the town Isla Cancún, which is on the Caribbean coast, with endless white sand beaches Ciudad Cancún is the old part of the town that has many excellent eating places and markets, there is plenty of nightlife of all kinds, as well as upmarket shopping possibilities.

Isla Mujeres is a small island located a short distance by ferry from Cancun, this is a small laid back quiet island the stunning beaches and of picturesque small main town with plenty of good quality restaurants located in a pedestrianised area in the centre of town. This is very popular island for those wishing to get away from it all. Mexico has a very wide choice of holiday locations around the country and is well worth consideration for your next getaway
