On the Costa Calida in the Spanish region of Murcia, close to Murcia’s San Javier Airport, and Around 100km’s south of Alicante airport, you will find La Manga, a thin slice of land nearly 30 km long, that the separates’ the Mediterranean from the Mar Menor inlet, a small inland sea.

Mar Menor is easily Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon, its coastline measures over 70kms and is dotted with many small villagers that are still very traditional flavour, with picturesque windmills and little whitewashed houses; the lagoon is also a magnet for water sports enthusiasts.
Mar Menor attracts huge numbers of birds including migrating flamingos, which are an incredible sight when they arrive in autumn, the lagoon is also known throughout Europe, for it is medicinal properties, as it is rich salt and iodine which very therapeutic for many ailments such as rheumatism.
The historic and cultural city of Murcia is just over an hour north from the area and offers an incredible wealth of culture, with museums and the stunning cathedral, as well as many attractive older buildings.
At La Manga is the world famous resort development of the same name, it boasts three world class 18 hole golf courses, health spa facilities, equestrian centres, a casino, several high quality designer swimming pools, a multitude of bars and fine dining restaurants, all laid out in a tropical garden setting.
Outside of the La Manga resort there is plenty to see and do, you can take the Mar Menor ferry from Santiago de la Ribera to Manga Puerto Harbour a very pleasant trip on the usually millpond like waters. At Cartagena Port there is also a catamaran cruise lasting around an hour passing by the hilltop castle and historic fort for a very scenic photo opportunity.
There are lots of small attractions such as go-karts, mini golf and so on. In the area, is Polaris World Garden Centre, which in addition to the beautiful surroundings, has a parrot centre, displays, children’s play area and daily workshops.
This unusual location has a lot to offer and, in addition, the shallow waters of the lagoon are warm enough to swim in nearly all year round, La Manga is an excellent choice for a peaceful and interesting holiday destination.
