Barcelona is probably best known for its weird and wonderful architecture, its many outrageous buildings such as Casa Batllo, the Park Guell and the awe inspiring Sagrada Familia which when finished will have taken two hundred years to construct. Numerous other stunning and unusual structures make this city one of the most interesting in the world to explore on foot.
There are also many museums, and art galleries stocked with the works of some of the worlds greatest artists such as the Museu Picasso which displays many works by Spain’s most famous creative talent. The Museu National d’ Art Catalunya not only has a huge collection Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque artwork but also has perhaps the finest view of the city below.
Barcelona may be a ‘culture vultures’ delight, but that is certainly not all this great city has to offer, there are plenty of other attractions to interest the whole family. The Barcelona Zoo is one of the best in Europe; the Magic Fountain of Montjuic is an extravaganza of lights, music and water that should be on every ones itinerary.
The Olympic stadium and port are well worth visiting, and if all this sightseeing tires you out, don’t forget that the city is also has some of the finest urban beach areas in Europe, and many other beach resort towns are within very easy reach.
Nightfall is the cue for locals and visitors to pour out into the streets and plazas to enjoy Barcelona’s famous nightlife. The main focal point for eating, drinking and people watching is Las Ramblas, two narrow streets crammed with restaurants, bars and people.
If you are not tired after a long event filled day you can move on to one of the cities late night venues that cater for every ‘crowd’ and every age group, you can dance or revel your way through till dawn in this very cosmopolitan city.
Barcelona has a major international airport near the city so long weekend breaks using low cost airlines are now popular as are longer holidays. Being located in northern Spain access by car and high speed rail are also viable ways of reaching Barcelona, who’s motto is, ‘The City belongs to you’.
